Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)

Advanced ultrasonic testing that images the inspected cross-section and detects flaws in welds and components with high precision.

What it is

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced non-destructive testing technique. Instead of a single crystal, the probe has many small elements (typically 16 to 128), fired electronically with small time delays between them.

This allows the sound beam to be steered and focused at different angles and depths without moving the probe, covering the area of interest in a single pass and producing images of the inspected cross-section.

How the test works

  1. PlanningAngles, focusing and coverage are defined according to the part geometry and the applicable standard.
  2. CalibrationThe equipment is set up on reference blocks to ensure reliable measurements.
  3. ScanningThe probe is moved over the area of interest with couplant, sweeping several angles at once.
  4. Image analysisIndications are located, sized and evaluated against the acceptance criteria.
  5. ReportResults are documented, with the test data recorded for traceability.

Where we apply it

  • Welded joints in structures, piping and pressure vessels
  • Bolts and pins, such as crane bolts
  • Forged and machined components
  • Naval and offshore structures

What it detects

  • Cracks
  • Lack of fusion and lack of penetration in welds
  • Porosity and inclusions
  • Laminations

Advantages

  • Cross-section images make interpretation easier
  • Several angles in a single scan
  • Recorded data for traceability and future comparison
  • No ionising radiation: no need to clear the area

Limitations and precautions

  • Requires a qualified technician and a specific procedure
  • Needs couplant and access to the surface
  • Coarse-grained materials and complex geometries require extra preparation

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Phased Array and conventional ultrasonic testing?

Conventional UT uses one beam angle at a time and displays the signal as a graph. Phased Array sweeps several angles simultaneously and produces cross-section images, speeding up the inspection and making analysis easier.

Can Phased Array replace radiography?

For many weld inspections, yes, when allowed by the applicable code or the client, with the advantage of using no radiation. The choice depends on the code and the joint type.

Shall we inspect your equipment?

On site, in the workshop or at your supplier, with a technical report at the end.
